What does an MP do in Kenya?

Understand an MP's responsibilities in representation, national law-making, public spending and oversight.

Representation and legislation

Members of the National Assembly represent constituencies and special interests, debate matters affecting the public and make national laws. These are collective functions of the Assembly: one MP cannot make a law alone.

Budgets and oversight

Under Article 95, the National Assembly allocates national government expenditure and oversees national revenue and its use. It also oversees State organs and reviews the conduct of specified State officers through constitutional procedures.

When assessing an MP, look for parliamentary questions, debates, committee work and documented actions rather than attributing every project in the constituency to that individual. A budget allocation or campaign promise is not proof that a project was delivered.
