How does Kenya's government work?

An introduction to the President, Parliament and county governments under the Constitution.

Two levels of government

Article 6 divides Kenya into counties and provides for national and county governments that are distinct and inter-dependent. The national executive, Parliament and Judiciary have different constitutional roles; county governments have their own executives and assemblies.

The President leads the national executive under Articles 129 to 132. Parliament consists of the National Assembly and Senate under Article 93. Each county government has a county assembly and county executive under Article 176.

Find the right representative

Your constituency elects an MP to the National Assembly; your county elects a Senator and a Woman Representative; your ward elects an MCA to the county assembly. The governor heads the county executive, rather than the county assembly.

Use the leader directory to explore recorded leaders by county, constituency and ward. Directory records are not official confirmation of the current holder of a seat; verify with Parliament, the relevant county assembly or IEBC.
