What does the President do in Kenya?

The President's constitutional role as Head of State, Head of Government and leader of the national executive.

The national executive

Articles 130 and 131 make the President the Head of State and Government and the person exercising national executive authority, with the Deputy President and Cabinet. The President directs and coordinates the functions of ministries and government departments and chairs Cabinet under Article 132.

The President is Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces and has duties to respect and uphold the Constitution. Presidential powers are subject to the Constitution, including rules on appointments, legislation and accountability.

Not every local service is a presidential function

County governments have their own functions under the Fourth Schedule. A President does not personally make national laws: Parliament legislates, while the President's role in assent and referral of Bills is set out in Article 115.
