Biography
H.E. Rigathi Gachagua served as the 2nd Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya, elected alongside President William Ruto in August 2022 on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket within the Kenya Kwanza Alliance. Before his election, he was Member of Parliament for Mathira Constituency in Nyeri County. In October 2024, the National Assembly initiated and voted on impeachment proceedings against him; the Senate sustained the impeachment, ending his term. The role of Deputy President is established by Article 147 of the Constitution and is the principal assistant of the President in the discharge of presidential functions.
