Biography
Former Secretary-General of UNCTAD (2013–2021), former Cabinet Minister for Trade (2002–2007), and former MP for Kimilili. Holds a PhD from the University of Bergen. Has publicly indicated his interest in contesting the 2027 presidential election.

Academic and researcher in trade, governance and development. Author of "Becoming Kenyans: Socio-Economic Transformation of the Pastoral Maasai" and other scholarly works on East African political economy. Senior consultant on regional trade and integration.
Political experience
Member of Parliament for Kimilili Constituency 1992–2007 (three terms). Cabinet Minister for Trade and Industry, Republic of Kenya, 2002–2007. Presidential candidate (Ford-Kenya) in the 2017 General Election nominations. 7th Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), 2013–2021 — one of the highest UN positions ever held by a Kenyan.

Led UNCTAD through the negotiation of the Nairobi Maafikiano (UNCTAD XIV outcome). Led major UN reforms on e-commerce for development, debt sustainability for least-developed countries, and post-Cotonou EU-ACP relations. Drove Kenya's WTO and EAC trade negotiations as Cabinet Minister.
